Pride of Baghdad is a powerful graphic novel based on a true story about a family of lions that escaped the Baghdad zoo during the American invasion. The drawings and the narrative are gripping and disturbing -- this is not a comic book for little kids. There are scenes of sexual and blood-thirsty violence, and the lions do NOT relate to each other like a happy human family such as you might find in Disney's The Lion King.
When the lions want to find out what is going on, what is causing the war that destroyed the zoo and seems to be tearing the world apart, an ancient turtle tells them,
There's black stuff under the earth, boy. Poison. When the walkers fight they send it spewing into the sky, and spilling into the... the sea.This is a book about casualties of war, and makes one wonder about the human victims of the Iraq War as well, though it doesn't tell their story. I have read this book last semester for a class and it was very disturbing to me as well. It was definitely not the way I pictured lions or the way they interact. It also made me think about the people who lose their lives overseas. You always see the death toll on the news but a book like this really puts numbers like that into perspective as more than just a number.
I had an extremely visceral reaction to this graphic novel when I thumbed through it last class. For me, it's more devastating to cast animals as victims of war. This text, though I have not read it, seems quite brilliant in design because any object that helps us to think about war from a new perspective brings us closer to clarity.
This book was inspired by the real life escape of a pride of lions during the beginning of the war. So, that makes it even more disturbing. The author wasn't using animals to tell the story arbitrarily, they actually were victims of the toll of war. That is what makes this book all the more powerful!
I love graphic novels. I think its great how it combines the delight of reading with the exhilaration of the cinema. I plan on getting this once I finish the massive amount of other readings we have to do for your class ;)
